What is Mehr-e-Fatimi?
The mehr (mahr) that Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) received on her marriage to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), commonly given as 500 dirhams of silver — the same amount as the mahr of most of the Prophet's (peace be upon him) wives (Sahih Muslim 1426). Many families choose it as a sunnah amount.
Converting dirhams to modern weights gives slightly different answers. The figure most often quoted in Pakistan and India is 131.25 tola (1,530.9 g) of silver; others use 480 dirhams (about 1,469.6 g) or 400 mithqal, 150 tola (about 1,749.9 g). The table shows all three at today's price.
Mehr in gold
In Pakistan, India and Bangladesh mehr is often agreed as a weight of gold — commonly a few tola (bhori) of 22K — because gold holds its value. Agree in writing whether the mehr means the gold itself, a piece of jewellery, or its value on the day it is paid, and how much is mu'ajjal (paid at the nikah) and mu'wajjal (deferred).
The minimum mehr in the Hanafi school is 10 dirhams of silver (30.62 g). There is no maximum, but the sunnah encourages a mehr the groom can pay.
