How gold is priced in Pakistan
In Pakistan gold is priced per tola (11.6638 g) and per 10 grams, mostly for 24K gold, with 22K and 21K common in jewellery. The prices here are the international spot price converted at today's USD/PKR rate — the benchmark local dealers start from.
How the local rate is set
The All Pakistan Gems and Jewellers Sarafa Association publishes daily per-tola rates for the major markets. These follow the international price and the dollar, but often carry a small premium: dealers reported around $20 an ounce above international prices in mid-2026. Shop prices then add making charges (mazdoori) and any losses (kaat) on jewellery.
Taxes
Since 2022, locally made gold jewellery has carried a reduced 3% sales tax on its sale value under the Eighth Schedule of the Sales Tax Act, in place of the standard 18%. Only registered jewellers charge it; many smaller shops are not registered and quote prices without it. Gold bars bought from Sarafa dealers are normally sold at the per-tola rate with no sales tax added, and commercial gold imports are tightly restricted. Rates are set in the annual Finance Act — confirm current figures with the FBR before a large purchase.
Why Pakistanis hold gold
Gold is central to weddings and bridal sets, and it is widely held as a hedge against rupee weakness and inflation — which is why gold priced in rupees has risen far more than gold priced in dollars over the long run (see the performance figures above).
