What does 999 mean on gold?

How much is 999 gold worth per gram today?

Can 999 gold be used for jewellery?
Yes, but it is soft: rings bend and scratch, and stones are hard to set securely. That is why most jewellery is 22K (916) or lower, with copper and silver added for strength.
999 on silver?
The same number on a silver item means fine silver (99.9% silver). Look for a silver mark, the word "fine silver" or the metal's colour; the decoder above checks the whole stamp.
Is 999 gold hallmarked?
The number alone is a purity mark, which in some countries the maker stamps and in others an assay office does. A full hallmark adds an independent mark: in India the BIS logo and a six-digit HUID, in the UK an assay office mark and the sponsor's mark. See hallmark rules by country.
