How gold gains are taxed
- Gains on precious metals "allo stato grezzo o monetato" (bars, ingots, coins) are redditi diversi under art. 67(1)(c-ter) TUIR, taxed at a 26% substitute tax, not at income tax rates. There's no holding-period exemption and no annual allowance.
- The gain is the sale price minus the documented purchase cost and related costs. For inherited gold, the cost is the value in the succession declaration; for gifted gold, the donor's cost.
- For sales from 1 January 2024, if you can't document the cost, the entire sale price is taxed. The old option of taxing 25% of the price was abolished by the 2024 Budget Law.
- The Revenue Agency confirmed in 2025 that "precious metals" means gold, silver, platinum and palladium.
- Worked gold such as jewellery is outside this rule, so an occasional sale isn't taxed.
Reporting
- You declare the gain yourself: 730 (quadro T, section II) or Redditi PF (quadro RT). The dealer doesn't withhold the tax.
- Gold held abroad must be reported in quadro RW.
Losses
- Losses offset other capital gains taxed as redditi diversi in the same year.
- Unused losses carry forward for four years if reported in the return for the year they arose; they can't offset investment income such as interest or dividends.
