ID and Cash Limits for Buying Gold in Qatar
In Qatar you can't pay cash above QAR 50,000 for precious metals, gemstones or jewellery: Law No. 4 of 2022 and Council of Ministers Decision No. 10 of 2022 require a card, cheque or bank transfer above that amount. Dealers apply full customer due diligence from QAR 50,000, and splitting a payment to stay under the limit doubles the penalty.

The rules in detail
- Law No. 4 of 2022 regulating the use of cash (published 3 July 2022) bans cash in listed transactions above QAR 50,000; Council of Ministers Decision No. 10 of 2022 lists the sale, purchase and rental of all precious metals, gemstones and jewellery among them.
- Above the limit you must pay by bank card, cheque or bank transfer. The penalty is up to 30% of the amount paid in cash, doubled if a deal is split or understated to get under the limit. Shops that don't keep proof of non-cash payment can be fined up to QAR 1 million.
- The Ministry of Commerce applies the same QAR 50,000 line to dealer due diligence: below it, the customer is screened against sanctions lists; at or above it, the dealer must apply full customer due diligence (Circular No. 3 of 2025, on gift vouchers, sets this out and counts related purchases by the same customer within one day together).
- Dealers report suspicious transactions or sources of funds to the Financial Information Unit immediately, whatever the amount.
When you sell
- The cash ban covers purchases by the shop too, so above QAR 50,000 you are paid by cheque or transfer.
- The Ministry of Interior has said a police no-objection certificate is needed to sell gold, issued after inspecting the gold and your ID (QID or passport), with any invoices; this was last widely reported in 2018.
- Gold bars and watches need the purchase invoice.
Silver and travel
- The cash ban covers all precious metals, so silver is treated the same.
- Cash, precious metals and gemstones worth QAR 50,000 or more must be declared when entering or leaving Qatar.
