ID and Cash Limits for Buying Gold in Turkey

In Turkey a jeweller must check your ID for gold deals of 370,000 TL or more, single or linked (doubled from 185,000 TL on 7 October 2026). Under tax rules, payments above 30,000 TL must go through a bank or payment institution (transfer, EFT or card), so cash is fine only up to that amount. Cash gold isn't banned, and the new Darphane tracking system doesn't record who buys.

The rules in detail

  • Jewellers (precious metal dealers) are obliged parties under Law 5549 and MASAK's Tedbirler Yönetmeliği. A change published in the Official Gazette on 7 October 2026 (no. 33393) doubled the identification threshold to 370,000 TL; linked transactions that reach it together (for example 200,000 TL + 170,000 TL) also need ID.
  • ID is also required at any amount when a suspicious transaction report is due, in an ongoing business relationship, or when the jeweller doubts the details you've given. Bring your Turkish ID card; foreigners use a passport.
  • Under the Tax Procedure Law communiqué (Sıra No. 459, amended by No. 575 in November 2024), collections and payments above 30,000 TL must be made through banks, payment institutions or the post office. The Finance Ministry says this applies to all goods, not just gold, and same-day payments with the same person are added together.
  • Splitting a purchase to stay under these limits doesn't work: linked transactions are counted together.

When you sell

  • The jeweller checks ID from 370,000 TL (or at any amount if it suspects something).
  • Payment above 30,000 TL should be by bank transfer.
  • KMTS codes bars and coins at production only; the Ministry says it doesn't record who sells.

Silver and travel

  • Silver: the same MASAK and 30,000 TL payment rules apply to all precious metals.
  • Travel: carrying gold or cash across the border is covered on our travel-allowance page.
In January 2026 reports said cash sales of gold would end when the Darphane's Precious Metal Tracking System (KMTS) started. The Treasury and Finance Ministry said these reports were false: KMTS only codes refinery bars and coins of 1 gram or more at production, doesn't record buyers or sellers, and there is no legal obstacle to trading gold. Jewellery such as rings and bracelets isn't covered.
